A Workbench For Your Workshop

Every fine woodworker needs a sturdy workbench. So, why not make this your first project? After all, you're going to need one sooner or later, if you don't have one already. (Maybe you'd like to replace the one you have.) Sound like a good idea? Need some ideas on how to make one?

How to Build Your Own Workbench? It's a simple, sturdy, practical and inexpensive design, and you can build it yourself, with some basic hand tools, and a circular saw or chop saw. You can construct simple workbench using a sheet of ¾ AC plywood, about 9 or 10 2” by 4” by 8' lengths of lumber, a box of 2 1/2” wood screws, and some thru-bolts. You'll even be able to build the workbench to a comfortable, custom height, so that you're not hunching over it while working. You can customize your workbench to suit your own personal needs, by adding simple shelves, 'cubby holes', tool caddies, storage racks, and simple drawers. You'll be able to modify your workbench anyway that you wish, and be enjoy having easy access to all your frequently-used tools. Some other popular woodworking projects suited to the beginning woodworker are:

Window Box - The kind that hangs from an exterior windowsill, to hold flowers. Build these out of insect resistant, and moisture-resistant wood, like pressure-treated pine, cedar, or hemlock. Window boxes are best hung with special hangers, which you can find at most hardware stores.
Picnic Table - Sketch out a plan for this project - or find a plan at a home improvement store. Don't forget to buy the hardware you need, like carriage thru-bolts, and long wood screws. Stainless hardware is expensive, but won't rust like zinc-plated hardware.
Wall Shelves - Simply sketch out a plan, and build to your specifications. Every household needs more shelving space! Solve some of your storage needs and enhance the appearance of any room at the same time, with a set of handcrafted shelves with decorative brackets.
Coffee Table - This may be a bit more challenging, but you can build one if you plan carefully, and pay close attention to measuring. Try to come up with a simple, yet sturdy plan, and use poplar or oak. Simple plans can be found at home improvement and craft stores.
